Puntland Sustainable Agrilivestock Network – PUSAN

Project Overview

In response to the growing concerns over unsafe pesticide usage and chemical handling in Bosaso, Somalia, this project empowered farmers and traders with critical knowledge and skills to enhance chemical security. Through a combination of mini-workshops and outreach campaigns, we promoted best practices in safe pesticide handling, storage, and disposal—ensuring a healthier environment and reducing health risks for local communities.

Funded by: Kenya Chemical Society & Chemical Security Program

Objectives

✅ Raise awareness among farmers and traders on safe pesticide usage, storage, and disposal.
✅ Reduce environmental and health risks associated with improper chemical handling.
✅ Establish a sustainable foundation for chemical security awareness within the local agricultural sector.

1. Targeted Workshops & Training

We conducted mini-workshops focusing on safe pesticide and agrochemical handling. These sessions included practical demonstrations, case studies, and interactive discussions, ensuring hands-on learning.

2. Outreach Campaigns

We launched awareness campaigns to reach a broader audience, distributing educational materials on proper chemical labeling, storage, and disposal. These campaigns ensured that even those who could not attend the workshops gained valuable knowledge.

3. Stakeholder Engagement

The project actively engaged 70+ farmers and 30+ traders, working closely with local agricultural organizations and community leaders to amplify our message and sustain long-term impact.

Impact:
The project empowered local farmers and traders to adopt safer practices, contributing to a reduction in health risks related to agrochemical misuse and fostering a more sustainable agricultural environment.
